The Company

Three Dog Bakery is a locally-owned retail bakery for dogs, specializing in all-natural cakes, cookies, and pastries for dogs. We feature a working kitchen on-site and bake treats every day of the week. Our bakery also carries boutique and specialty brands of packaged treats, dog and cat food, chews, toys, accessories, spa products, and gifts.

What really sets us apart are our baked items. Crafted from scratch in small batches, our highly skilled pastry chefs use only simple, real ingredients, slow baking each recipe to lock in all those luscious flavors and canine-loving nutrients. So healthy and so drool-worthy, we consider our treats and cuisine to be the absolute best in the animal kingdom.

Three Dog Bakery has been making tails wag since 1989, and today our mission remains the same –– feed the souls of dogs and the people that love them!

Manager:

Our store manager is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the bakery and leading all staff. Areas of responsibility include customer service, hiring, scheduling, training, baking, decorating, open/close activities, and inventory management. The position requires familiarity with standard concepts, practices, and procedures of retail sales and operations.

Hours: 

  • Minimum of 40 hours per week at the bakery. Our store manager has the autonomy to self-schedule after learning the characteristics of each day of the week. Friday – Sunday are typically our busiest days.

  • Availability on evenings, weekends, and holidays as staffing needs require is expected.

  • We have a blackout period between Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day to ensure strong leadership coverage during the most important period of our fiscal year. 

  • Our store manager regularly provides support to the store associates and pastry chefs and is available to fill in when scheduling conflicts arise.

  • Current bakery business hours:

    • Monday – Thursday 10am – 8pm

    • Friday and Saturday 9am – 8pm

    • Sunday 10am – 7pm

  • The bakery staff schedule begins one our before opening and ends one hour after closing relative to the operating hours on each day of the week.

  • Typical operating structure is two staff members on shift at a time, with incremental staff added during higher traffic periods.

  • Demonstrate strong knowledge of Three Dog Bakery and vendor products, basic dog behavior, and basic dog dietary and nutritional concepts to answer customer questions and make recommendations.

Management Key Responsibilities: 

  • Supervise, coach, train, motivate and direct the work of all staff members. 

  • Prepare and manage daily staff schedule, with owner review. Coordinate time off requests. Adequately staff peak periods and holidays. We currently utilize the When I Work application for availability and schedule management.

  • Communicate daily sales goals to staff and track actual performance relative to goals. Daily sales goals are provided by owners.

  • Provide ongoing training in the areas of bakery operations, product knowledge, customer service, and commitment to quality.

  • Lead corrective action when needed and participate in staff reviews.

  • When not at the bakery, manager is available to the team by phone/text during staff hours to respond to team needs, unless prior arrangements are in place.

  • Screen, interview, and hire applicants for the store associate and pastry chef positions. Collect relevant new-hire documents/identification and provide to owners.

  • Plan and lead periodic all-hands staff meetings.

  • Participate in periodic strategy and planning meetings with owners.

  • Track and operate within owner-provided budgets for labor hours, office supplies, cleaning supplies, kitchen supplies, employee recognition/gifts, and meals. Communicate challenges to owners.

  • Save all receipts and invoices to appropriate folders for accounting review.

Operations: 

  • Perform all daily opening and closing tasks and weekly tasks.

  • Utilize forms and maintain daily paperwork, including count sheets, to-do lists, and check sheets.

  • Direct and complete all daily operations to always ensure excellence in appearance and product presentation. 

  • Regularly operate the bakery register/POS, ring up customer transactions, assist customers, manage online orders, stock product, answer the store phone, prepare bank deposits, wash dishes, clean, bake product, and customize treats. 

  • Maintain store organization and cleanliness.

  • Manage inventory receiving, pricing, stocking, organization, cycle counting, and freshness rotation.

  • Purchase and/or order operational supplies.

  • Communicate inventory needs to owners. Manager may take on responsibility for ordering from certain vendors/distributors.

  • Ensure the baking staff has all necessary raw materials and run errands to local stores as needed. 

  • Stay aware of all baking activities and ensure appropriate levels of treats are always on hand. Assist with baking and decorating treats. Pastry chefs are responsible for preparing the baking and decorating schedule, and the store manager is responsible for oversight of the pastry chefs.

  • Price and schedule custom orders.

  • Read and reply to store email inbox. Coordinate replies with owners as appropriate. Check for voice messages and return customer calls.

Merchandising: 

  • Promote and execute store promotions and special events. 

  • Make product recommendations to owners and provide reviews on existing products. 

  • Merchandising displays change throughout the year and store manager is responsible for ensuring product is stocked, styled, and priced correctly.

  • Set up seasonal décor and merchandising displays.

Business Development: 

  • Support events with business partners, shopping center management, dog rescue groups, and other organizations.

  • Perform other duties as assigned by owners.
     

Knowledge and Skill Requirements:

  • Must love dogs.

  • Service skills: Ability to craft and promote a customer-oriented and team-oriented culture. Ability to think outside the box and find solutions to questions on the spot. Ability to politely diffuse difficult situations and maintain respect under all circumstances. Confidence to ask problematic visitors to exit the bakery and escort them out the door.

  • People skills: Comfort in public settings and overtly friendly and welcoming toward all people. Ability to motivate staff to ensure the store’s success. Balance praise with correction. 

  • Training skills: Ability to train others to complete tasks with excellence.

  • Business skills: Ability to operate within a budget, use POS system to evaluate sales metrics, and competency in discussing basic financial operating concepts with owners.

  • Time management: Manage your own time and the time of others. Prioritization and time management is the differentiator between success and failure.

  • Leadership skills: Ability to inspire others to work toward a common vision and purpose.

  • Decision-Making skills: Confident ability to make decisions with customers, staff, and vendors that positively impact the image of the store and promote business growth.

  • Communication: In both written and verbal form, the store manager must be able to communicate vision, plan, direction, and strategy. Manager must be comfortable speaking in group settings and spelling, grammar, and diction must be excellent.

Education and Experience:

  • High School Diploma or GED required, Associate or bachelor’s degree preferred.

  • Three to five years of retail, sales or customer service experience required.

  • Experience with POS system and inventory management software required.

  • Previous management experience required.

  • Previous experience in the pet industry preferred.

  • Previous baking, pastry and decorating experience preferred.

Physical Requirements:

  • Position requires stooping, reaching, standing, lifting, talking, hearing, and repetitive motion.

  • Must be able to exert up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and up to 10 pounds of force frequently.

  • Must be able to lift parcels weighing up to 50 pounds occasionally and up to 30 pounds frequently.

  • Visual acuity required to determine accuracy, neatness, and thoroughness of work or to make general observations of facilities or structures.

  • Employee is subject to environmental conditions both inside and outside the facility.

 

Pastry Chef:

Our pastry chef is responsible for management of our kitchen operations. We make a wide assortment of cookies, cakes, and pastries to celebrate the joy dogs bring into our lives. Our pastry chef sets the schedule for the kitchen, manages raw materials and supplies inventory, bakes, and decorates treats. Our bakery offerings and flavors change with every season. 

 

Hours: 

  • Full-time position requires a minimum 32 hours per week.

  • Part-time position requires a minimum 8 hours per week.

  • Flexibility on evenings, weekends, and holidays is expected.

  • Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, Valentine’s, Easter, and July 4th are busy holiday periods.

  • We have a general blackout period between Thanksgiving and Christmas to ensure strong leadership and kitchen coverage during the most important period of our fiscal year. Time off must be pre-approved during that time.

  • Pastry chefs primarily work during business hours as we have an open kitchen and customers enjoy seeing our treats being baked and decorated. That is part of our customer experience.

  • Pastry chefs personalize select cakes and cookies with dogs’ names on demand.

Operations: 

  • Manage daily kitchen baking and decorating schedule. Ingredients and recipes change with holidays/seasons throughout the year.

  • Direct associate staff to bake recipes in preparation for decorating.

  • Bake and decorate birthday and celebration cakes.

  • Advise on, price, and schedule custom cake inquiries.

  • Bake and decorate cookies, pupcakes, and all other pastries.

  • Manage and communicate inventory of ingredients and consumable supplies.

  • Personalize cakes and cookies for advance and walk-in orders.

  • Maintain kitchen organization and cleanliness.

  • Wash dishes and supplies.

  • Support associate staff with assisting customers with product selection, ringing customer transactions, answering the bakery phone during peak periods.

Knowledge and Skill Requirements:

  • Must love dogs.

  • Pastry skills: Confidence and competence with pastry bags, a variety of decorating tips, parchment paper bags, buttercream frosting, royal icing, cake decorating, cookie decorating, and writing on cakes/cookies with exceptional penmanship. Attention to detail and a commitment to quality is required. 

  • Experience with commercial ovens and mixers.

  • Time management: Ability to manage and prioritze to-do lists and time. Time management is the differentiator between success and failure.

  • Service skills: Ability to support a customer-oriented and team-oriented culture. Ability to think outside the box and find solutions to questions/problems on the spot. Ability to politely diffuse difficult situations and maintain respect under all circumstances.

Store Associate:

We’re looking for energetic store associates with retail industry experience, a commitment to providing top-notch customer service, and a love for both dogs and the people who love them. Our store associates are the public face of our bakery and the reason customers return.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Greeting customers, responding to questions, improving engagement with our products and providing outstanding customer service.

  • Operating bakery registers, managing financial transactions, and balancing drawers.

  • Achieving established goals.

  • Directing customers to and assisting with products in the bakery.

  • Increasing in bakery sales.

  • Superior product knowledge.

  • Maintaining an orderly appearance throughout the sales floor.

  • Introducing promotions and opportunities to customers.

  • Cross-selling products to increase purchase amounts.

  • Bakery open and close activities.

  • Assisting with baking and decorating.

  • Coordinating and facilitating special events both in the bakery and off-site.

 

Requirements:

  • At least 18 years of age.

  • Retail sales experience.

  • A professional appearance.

  • Maintain a positive attitude and focus on customer satisfaction in a fast-paced environment.

  • The ability to read, write, and perform basic math.

  • The ability to stand and walk for extended periods of time.

 

The Locations:

Our Rice Village Bakery is located at 2402A Rice Boulevard, Houston, TX 77005 at the corner of Rice Boulevard and Morningside Drive.

Our Heights location will be located at 1141 E 11th Street Houston, TX 77009 on the corner of E 11th Street and Studewood Street.
